You can enter references manually via this button or via References – New Reference at the top of the screen.
A new screen (pop-up) will appear:
Here Journal Article is the default Reference Type.
If you click on the arrow next to “Journal Article” you see the other reference types available (e.g. Book, Book Section etc.).
If you enter a new reference manually, the first thing you have to do is to check whether the reference type is correct. The reference type determines which fields are available.
In the fields (Author, Year, Title etc.) you see in the figure above, you type in the data. You can go to the next field by using the Tab-key.
When you have finished entering a reference, you click the Save button. After that you can close the pop-up screen.
Important issues for correct manual input:
- If a publication has various authors, place each author on a separate line.
- Authors can be typed in the following ways:
Greenaway, P. J.
Greenaway, Peter J.
But also Peter J. Greenaway is correct.
Enter them preferably all in the same way.
- Place prefixes before the last name:
Van der Molen, G.H.
- When an institute is the author place a comma at the end, e.g. The Netherlands Institute for Social Research,
Do not use comma's in the name of the institute.
- Do not use Vol., Ed., ed., pp., italic etc. These things are taken care of later via the output style.
- Use the DOI field to place the Digital Object Identifier (a unique and persistent number which identifies electronic documents).
- Use the URL field to place a link to the electronic version of the publication which can be found on the internet or on your PC.
- Use the File Attachments field to link to the PDF version of the publication on your own computer.
- If you have imported the standard term lists for journals in your library (see section 3.1 of this module), you probably can benefit from it now when you add journal articles.
