The publishing of books (monographs or edited volumes) in open access is still lagging behind compared to open access articles. There are several initiatives to raise the level of open access book publishing.
Radboud University Press is a department within Radboud University, a Diamond Open Access publisher of academic peer-reviewed books and journals of high quality in a large number of disciplines. The 'Diamond' label means that open access publications are offered that are free for authors and readers alike. The authors retain full copyright.
Please see for more information the website of Radboud University Press.
Academic funder NWO wants to stimulate the Open Access publication of academic books that result from NWO funding by providing funds for the payment of Book Processing Charges. Applications for the Open Access book publication fund can only be submitted by project leaders or co-applicants of awarded NWO research projects.
Please visit the NWO website for more information about the fund and how to apply.
If you are considering the publication of your book in Open Access you may want to use the OAPEN Open Access Books Toolkit. This toolkit, created in collaboration with Springer Nature and The University of Glasgow, will help book authors to make their work open access, and enable more institutional support teams to identify the right information to help their researchers.
