You can enter references manually via this button
or via File – New Item > and choose your reference type at the top of the screen.
A new screen will appear at the right:

If you enter a new reference manually, the first thing you have to do is to check whether the reference type is correct. The reference type determines which fields are available.
You type in the data in the relevant fields (Title, Author, Volume etc.) you see in the figure above. You can go to the next field by using the Tab-key.
When you have finished entering a reference, the reference is automatically saved and it will appear in the middle screen.
Important issues for correct manual input:
- If a publication has various authors, place each author on a separate line by clicking on the +-symbol
- Authors can be typed in the following ways:
Greenaway, P. J.
Greenaway, Peter J.
But also Peter J. Greenaway is correct by clicking on Switch to single field-icon
Enter them preferably all in the same way; be consistent!
- Place prefixes before the last name and retain the author's preferred capitalisation:
van der Molen, G.H.
de Beauvoir, S.
Dos Santos, S.
- When the author is an institute place a comma at the end, e.g. The Netherlands Institute for Social Research,
Do not use comma's in the name of the institute.
- Do not use Vol., Ed., ed., pp., italic etc. These things are taken care of later via the output style.
- Use the DOI field to place the Digital Object Identifier (a unique and persistent number which identifies electronic documents).
- Use the URL field to place a link to the electronic version of the publication which can be found on the internet or on your PC.
- Open the Abstract box by clicking on the arrow and paste the abstract.
- Click the +-symbol behind Attachments field to link to the (PDF) File, Linked File or Web Link..
- Click the +-symbol to add Notes
- Click the +-symbol to choose a New collection... or select a libray for the record
- Click the +-symbol to add Tags
- Click the +-symbol to add a Related record from your library
