At a time when criminal justice systems appear to be in a permanent state of crisis, leading scholars from criminology and theology come together to challenge criminal justice orthodoxy by questioning the dominance of retributive punishment. This timely and unique contribution considers alternatives that draw on Christian ideas of hope, mercy and restoration. Promoting cross-disciplinary learning, the book will be of interest to academics and students of criminology, socio-legal studies, legal philosophy, public theology and religious studies, as well as practitioners and policy makers.

This book explores how phenomenological ideas about embodiment, perception, and lived experience are discussed within disability studies, critical race theory, and queer studies. Building on these disciplines, it offers readings of memoirs and novels that address the consequences of stigmatization and the bodily dimensions of social differences. All of the texts discussed in this book negotiate the significance of bodily and perceptual habits, the influence of language and culture on embodiment, the importance of relationality and community, the severe effects of misrecognition, and the possibilities of emancipation and social recognition. Hence, they are read as pioneering contributions to the emerging field of critical phenomenology.

Niet alleen pater Karmeliet, maar ook één van de eerste hoogleraren Wijsbegeerte en rector aan de Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen. Een toonaangevend persoon in de herontdekking van de Nederlandse mystiek, zelfs mysticus, een ondergewaardeerde theologische hoogvlieger en toch dicht bij de gewone mensen. Niet in het laatst werd hij ook bekend als verzetsheld en martelaar. Zeven wetenschappers van de Radboud Universiteit en het Titus Brandsma Instituut belichten in dit prachtig full colour geïllustreerde hardcover boek ieder aspect uit het leven van het bewonderingswaardige mens dat Titus Brandsma was.

Mensen zijn in staat elkaars emoties van het gezicht te lezen, maar hoe doen andere dieren dat? Mariska Kret laat zien welke verschillen én overeenkomsten er zijn tussen mens en dier. Voor alle dieren die in sociale groepen leven is het belangrijk te begrijpen waar hun soortgenoten zich mee bezighouden. Gezichtsexpressies, lichaamstaal en andere emotionele uitingen spelen daarbij een cruciale rol. Charles Darwin merkte al op dat er een hoop overeenkomsten zijn in de uitingen van emoties van mensen en andere dieren. Dit is met name het geval met dieren waarmee we een lang evolutionair verleden delen, zoals bonobo’s en chimpansees. Elk dier op aarde is uniek en heeft dus ook een uniek repertoire aan emoties tot zijn beschikking. Mariska Kret laat ons zien welke verschillen er zijn, tussen mens en dier, én belangrijker nog: welke overeenkomsten.

In 2009, filmmaker Manthia Diawara, along with his camera, documented his conversations with Martinican philosopher, writer, and poet Édouard Glissant aboard the Queen Mary II on their transatlantic journey from Southampton, England to New York City. This book examines the history of the political demography of Indonesia. Chronologically, the book begins by introducing the colonization program as a predecessor of transmigration program after independence. The transmigration program, Indonesias state policy on migration, is discussed at length in the book but other migration related issues are also presented to show the complex relationship between migration and other social, economic and political issues in Indonesia. In the final chapter, the book discusses the contemporary issues and challenges of disintegration that is facing Indonesia as a nation-state. The book ends with an epilog that shows Indonesias political demography challenges in the 21st Century.
