Open Educational Resources: the basics

The aim of this LibGuide is to create awareness of Open Educational Resources (OER) within Radboud University. Lecturers who want to create their own teaching resources or to reuse resources created elsewhere in their field can find inspiration or ask for support here. The Radboud Open Education Team (openeducation@ru.nl) is ready to provide support.

What do we mean by open educational resources?

Open educational resources are published with an open licence, such as the Creative Commons. These licences allow users to copy, use, reuse, edit, re-arrange and distribute the work. They are known as Open Educational Resources (OER) internationally too.

The use and reuse of OER is often linked to David Wiley 5 Rs:

Retain
Reuse
Revise
Remix
Redistribute

The educational cooperative SURF has written an introduction on further defining and use and reuse of open educational resources.

Menu Open Educational Resources

To have all benefits and forms of Open Education Resources in one handy form we have created the Menu.

It is a bit playful to think in terms of a menu and ingredients, but the Menu offers a strong overview of why and how you can open up your education, from just a tiny appetizer to a full diner.

We always bring some printed menus with us during coffee lectures or other presentations at the Radboud campus. But please feel free to download (and share) the digital version of our Menu.

Open educational resources at Radboud University

Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Research Methods Femmie de Vegt has a particular interest in reusing OER, as it enables her and her students to use flexible education.

‘I use lots of open resources for my classes. There’s already so much good stuff out there, so it would be a waste if I weren’t to make use of it too. And I have more time to go into depth with students.’
