Open Educational Resources: MOOCs

The aim of this LibGuide is to create awareness of Open Educational Resources (OER) within Radboud University. Lecturers who want to create their own teaching resources or to reuse resources created elsewhere in their field can find inspiration or ask for

MOOCs

MOOC stands for ‘Massive Open Online Course’: an online course that anyone in the world can register for. Participation is free. You can take some MOOCs at your own pace, while others are offered live. MOOCs require individual study; participants are tested and they sometimes receive a certificate. Accordingly, MOOCs are more than simply digital compilations of lectures.

Radboud University does not facilitate the creation of MOOCs at this point in time. This said, several Radboud lecturers have provided input as lecturers in MOOCs provided by other institutions. Some Radboud lecturers have even initiated and led MOOCs hosted elsewhere. A few examples are provided below:

Example 1: Miracles of Human Language

Prof. Marc van Oostendorp is professor of Dutch and Academic Communication at Radboud University. Before his appointment in Nijmegen, he worked for Leiden University. He set up the MOOC  Miracles of Human Language there. Marc, on initial doubts and the eventual success of this MOOC:

They [Leiden University] were a bit hesitant about that, but then, at some point, they thought “we want to do that as well” and I made a MOOC. It turned out to be very big and is still running. It has about 150,000 participants. The title is Miracles of Human Language, it is a MOOC on Coursera. You can still follow it if you want. It was a big pleasure to make an introductory course for such a large group.

Example 2: New Business Models - Working together on Value Creation

Prof. Jan Jonker is Professor Emeritus of Sustainable Business at the Nijmegen School of Management. He developed the MOOC  New Business Models - Working together on Value Creation. This MOOC is taken at the participants own pace, and it guides them to create a sustainable Business Model, step-by-step. The MOOC is supported by an open access handbook, Organizing for Sustainability - A Guide to Developing New Business Models.

About the handbook:

'This book will be of interest to students studying the development of business models, sustainable management, innovation, and value creation. It will also be of interest to executives, and professionals such as consultants or social entrepreneurs seeking further education.'
