Sources and tools for finding economic and financial literature and quantitative data

  The Upright Project

The Upright Project is a Helsinki-based organization that has developed a net impact quantification model for companies and funds. On their platform, Upright offers a database with impact profiles of c. 57.000 company and c. 43.000 fund profiles. These impacts are organized in 4 dimensions: environment, health, society, and knowledge. In addition, Upright offers data in alignment with various regulatory / standard frameworks: EU Taxonomy, the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR), the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) double-materiality assessments and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Unlike many other ESG data providers, Upright does not primarily rely on companies' sustainability reporting. They collect their own data from many (often open access) sources and scientific literature. See the Upright Knowledge Base for detailed information on the methodology and the available variables.

Data is available from 2022 onwards. The metrics are updated a number of times a year in so-called "releases".

Availability

NSM has full access to the Upright platform for the academic year 2025-2026. After termination of the license in June, researchers and students are still permitted to use the data they downloaded for further research (cf. terms & conditions below).

Access

The data is available in the form of company profiles in the Upright data portal. It is also possible to create company portfolio's in the portal. Bulk downloads can be done via the Upright API.

1. Apply for an Upright account via the NSM data team, datasupport-NSM@ubn.ru.nl. Use your Radboud email address and indicate whether you are a researcher / staff member or a student. The data team will share your name and email with the provider, and they will create an account for you. This might take a few working days.

Choose a unique password for your Upright account that is different from your Radboud password.

For researchers, API access is granted automatically. Students may request API access separately, as it is not included by default.

2. The data team also downloaded the full historical database. These datasets are available as .csv files in a secured folder (working group folder / "werkgroepmap"). At the moment, this database covers all metrics for all companies in the Upright universe (2022- ). They are available in 3 formats:

- all metrics for all companies per release (folder raw data)

- all historical metrics for all companies in one big merged file

- all historical metrics for all companies in panel data format (1 observation per company per year)

The data includes company identifiers like the ISIN code.

At the moment the data in the working group folder does not yet include the CSRD double materiality impact measures.

If you want to work with the data, please download a copy of the files you need from the working group folder and work with the data on your own device.
Apply for access to the working group folder by sending an email to
NSM data team, datasupport-NSM@ubn.ru.nl. Use your Radboud email address and indicate whether you are a researcher / staff member or a student.
