The Chicago Manual of Style contains rules for citing various types of publications and sources. In particular, see Chapters 14 and 15. The most common types of references are addressed in this e-learning module.
The reference method you should use depends on your discipline. Always ask your lecturer which reference method you should use. Choose a style and use it consistently. If you are going to use a style other than the Chicago Manual of Style, take a look at the APA e-learning module from the University Library or the MLA handbook on the internet.
